What We Believe

"All scripture is given by God, and is profitable...that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."
2 Timothy 3:16, 17

Core Beliefs

The following are the core beliefs of Calvary Chapel Ellicott City based on the foundational truths taught in the bible. All of our teaching and ministry is rooted in and flows out of these biblical doctrines.

The Bible

We believe that the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the Word of God, fully inspired, infallible and the basis for our doctrine and faith. (Isaiah 28:13; John 17:17; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; Hebrews 4:12; 1 Peter 1:23-25; 2 Peter 1:21)

The Godhead

We believe there is one living and true God, eternally existing in three persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. (Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 9:6; Isaiah 44:8; Matthew 28:19-20; John 10:30)

God the Father

We believe in the person of God the Father, an infinite, eternal, personal Spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom, power and love; that He is mercifully concerned with the affairs of man; that He hears and answers prayer and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ.
(Psalm 89:26; Psalm 90:2; John 3:16; John 4:24; 1 Timothy 1:17)

The Person and Work of Jesus Christ

We believe that Jesus Christ was begotten by God, conceived by the Holy Spirit and born to the virgin Mary. We believe in His sinless life, His miracles and teachings, His substitutionary death on a cross, His bodily resurrection, His ascension into Heaven and His perpetual intercession for His people.
(Isaiah 7:14; Micah 5:2; Matthew 1:23; Mark 16:19; Luke 1:34-35; John 1:1-2; John 11:25; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; 1 Timothy 3:16; Hebrews 1:8; Hebrews 4:15; 1 John 1:2)

The Second Coming of Jesus Christ

We believe in the blessed hope, which is the personal, visible and imminent return of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. (Matthew 16:27; Acts 1:11; Revelation 19:11-16)

The Holy Spirit

We believe the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, who convicts the world of sin, righteousness and judgment. We believe that the Holy Spirit regenerates and indwells every believer in Jesus Christ and that He is an abiding helper, teacher and guide empowering all believers for ministry.
(Acts 1:8; 2 Corinthians 3:18; John 14:16-17; John 16:8-11; Romans 8:26; Romans 15:13, 16; Hebrews 9:14)

The Gifts of the Spirit

We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit and the exercise of all Biblical gifts of the Spirit according to the instructions given to us in 1 Corinthians 12-14.

We believe that mankind was created in the image of God, sinned, and thereby incurred not only physical death, but spiritual death, which is separation from God. We believe that all human beings are born with a sinful nature.
(Genesis 1:27; Romans 3:23; Colossians 2:13;
Ephesians 4:18; Romans 5:12)

We believe the gospel – the good news that God forgives, regenerates, and saves all who come to Him through faith in Jesus Christ alone. This is possible because, although all humans are guilty, Jesus Christ died on the cross in our place for our sins absorbing God’s wrath on our behalf. In so doing God is able to forgive the spiritual crimes of people without violating the demands of justice. God offers an invitation to every sinner to believe in the gospel for reconciliation with God.
(Romans 3:23; Acts 3:19; Acts 20:21; Ephesians 2:1-3; Ephesians 2:8-9; 1 John 2:2; John 3:16; John 14:6;
Matthew 11:28; 2 Peter 3:9; Revelation 22:17)
