As the tribes of Israel advanced into the Promised Land, God commanded them first to take the territory of Canaan, which Egypt had long possessed. Egypt would not be able to put up a fight because God had devastated them 40 years prior when He sent the plagues, followed by the destruction of their army in the Red Sea.
